Rooted in history and crafted for the future of malt.

Homestead Malting was born from over 100 years of farming, service, and stewardship. Today, we bring that same dedication to every grain we malt—for brewers who want to know their ingredients and trust their source

Our Roots

A Legacy Planted in 1917

In 1917, James and Nancy Sossaman laid the foundation for what would become a four-generation family farm in Queen Creek, Arizona. Though James passed during the Great Flu Pandemic, Nancy and their son Jasper—fresh from WWI service—tended the land with resilience and purpose.

Through the Great Depression and WWII, the Sossaman family grew cotton, grains, and vegetables to feed and support the local community. Each generation continued that legacy of service: from Jamie’s time as a Korean War pilot to Steve’s leadership growing ancient grains for sustainability.

Now, Homestead Malting is stewarded by Scott Sossaman, a 28-year U.S. Army veteran, who is reimagining the next era of agricultural service—with his nephews and daughter by his side.

This isn’t just a business. It’s a family tradition—reborn for craft brewing.

More Than Malt — It’s Our Mission

We believe malt should tell a story. Ours begins on historic Arizona land and continues with a commitment to:

  • Serving local brewers and distillers with better supply solutions
  • Using sustainable farming practices and growing drought tolerant crops that support the land and community
  • Solving inefficiencies in the malt supply chain with a vertically integrated process
  • Honoring our family’s tradition of agricultural service

Grow & Source

We grow our grains right on the century-old Sossaman Homesteads using low-water, sustainable techniques. With the support of trusted Arizona farming partners, we cultivate heritage and modern varieties—like barley, White Sonora wheat, and triticale—selected for performance, resilience, and flavor.

Clean, Process & Store

Partnering with Grain R&D, we clean, sort, and condition every batch to meet the highest USDA standards. This step ensures consistency, quality, and shelf stability—laying the foundation for a reliable and high-performing malt.

Malt, Pack & Deliver

Malted on-site in small, precise batches, our grains are then carefully bagged and delivered with full traceability. No middlemen. No shortcuts. Just premium malt designed for brewers and distillers who care about their craft.
